General Contractor License in Florida
A general contractor license in Florida authorizes construction work statewide (certified) or in specific jurisdictions (registered). Issued by the CILB under Chapter 489, it ensures minimum competency, financial stability, and insurance coverage.
License Types
- Certified: Statewide authority to perform construction
- Registered: Limited to specific local jurisdictions
- Authority: Build, alter, repair, demolish any structure
- Subcontracting: Can hire licensed specialty contractors
Requirements
- 4+ years construction experience (or education equivalent)
- Pass state licensing examination (business + trade)
- Credit and background check
- Proof of financial stability and minimum net worth
- General liability insurance ($300,000 minimum)
- 14 hours continuing education per biennium
Unlicensed Work
Criminal offense: first offense is a misdemeanor; second is a felony. Unlicensed contractors cannot enforce contracts, collect payment, or file liens.
